Kitchen manufacturers have developed eco-friendly flooring solutions for the environmentally conscious consumer. Going “green” no longer means bland and boring – there are now so many different eco-friendly flooring solutions to suit all tastes and budgets.
Cork
Cork is a relatively new material in terms of flooring. Cork is harvested from the bark of a cork oak that regrows every three years – making it an ideal renewable source.
Cork is an easy material to clean and has good foot support and sound absorption qualities. Its other qualities include being hypoallergenic, non-toxic and naturally mold and pest resistant.
Bamboo
Bamboo flooring is a wood-like option that is gaining popularity as a flooring material as it is durable, easy to maintain and is easy to install. A naturally sustainable material, bamboo is made from natural vegetation that grows to maturity in three to five years. Bamboo is available in many hues that will work in any setting and décor
Linoleum
Linoleum flooring is often mistaken with vinyl flooring. Vinyl is synthetic and made of chlorinated petrochemicals which are harmful. Linoleum on the other hand, is created from a mixture of linseed oil, cork dust, tree resins, wood flour, pigments and ground limestone.
Similar to cork, linoleum is both fire and water resistant. Linoleum has a long life cycle and with the added protection of a new sealer it will hold up to a lot of stains as well as everyday wear and tear.
Glass Tiles
Another renewable source for flooring are glass tiles. Glass tiles are made up of recycled wine and beer bottles. It is fast becoming a wonderful option for not only floors but for bathroom and kitchen walls.
Glass is non-absorptive and won’t mildew or mold in damp environments, easy to maintain and won’t stain. It is available in wide variety of colors, patterns and finishes to suit all tastes and budgets. Glass reflects light, unlike ceramic tiles which absorbs it – adding that extra layer of light to the room.
