How to Design a White Kitchen

White kitchens are a very popular kitchen choice as they are fresh, timeless and create the impression of a larger space. If you are after a sophisticated and versatile kitchen design, a white kitchen will add a beautiful finish to your home. If your dream kitchen has an all-white interior but you’re not sure how to approach the style, read our simple guide on how to design a white kitchen.

Shade
White is a versatile colour which can look great in any style kitchen, from modern to traditional. Choosing the right shade of white, a warm or a cool tone, can change the whole look of your kitchen. White with blue undertones are a cooler shade while white with a pink or yellow undertone are a warm shade. Warm undertones work well in kitchens which don’t get much natural light, a subtle pink undertone or mild creamy white shades are best. Be careful not to mix shades with different undertones when choosing kitchen materials.

Space
As white gives the illusion of a larger space, it is a great colour choice for smaller kitchens. To create the look of a larger kitchen, use white shades on all of your surfaces such as your kitchen bench top, cabinet doors and walls to ensure each surface will blend in with the rest of the kitchen. Shiny surfaces and other reflective materials will reflect light and make your kitchen appear bigger.

Warmth
If you are worried your all-white kitchen will appear too stark, the easiest way to add warmth to your cooking space without too much colour is to add timber. The softness of a light coloured timber will create a homely feel to your kitchen. Try using timber features for your bench top or cabinets to subtly soften the décor. Adding a few neutral coloured decorations will also add warmth to the space.

Texture and Depth
If you are designing a completely white kitchen, you may want to add some finishing touches to create texture and depth, breaking up the seamless white surfaces. Use alternate materials such as textured tiles with a darker grout for your kitchen splashback or mix matte white cabinets with glossy bench tops. Incorporate detailed kitchen cabinets instead of flat panelled doors to add some depth while still maintaining a crisp look.

Contrast
A white kitchen is a perfect blank canvas for other contrasting colours. If you wish to add a touch of colour, consider painting your floor, furniture or walls a darker colour. A classic black and white kitchen is a sophisticated and timeless colour scheme which will easily suit any home.
