As the workhorse of the home, the kitchen takes more bumps and knocks than a professional football player. This is one of the main reasons why I love polyurethane kitchens – they are low maintenance and durable!
Polyurethane kitchens are not only durable and hardy, but also right on trend. A parade of crisp styling and professional finishes. A kitchen with a polyurethane finish is primed to outlast many of the alternative material options and is a popular choice amongst homes of old and new.
But first, what exactly is a polyurethane kitchen?
Polyurethane is a coating of paint-like product which is sprayed directly on to an MDF substrate (or another base). When applied, polyurethane settles as a plastic-type finish.
Polyurethane kitchens feature this special coat applied to cabinetry, rather than common vacuum form doors (which is a plastic film fixed to the base). Typically, you can recognise vacuum doors on flat packs or cabinetry purchased from large-chain stores, which are often made from this material. Polyurethane offers a more professional and durable finish.
As well as offering a modern and stylish finish to new kitchen designs, polyurethane coating can bring new life back to any old, worn
kitchen cabinetry. It can be used to refresh, cover up, or reinvigorate a kitchen in a renovation project.
Benefits of polyurethane kitchens
#1 Colour selection
As polyurethane is basically a painted finish, polyurethane kitchens offer an endless array of colour options. This is particularly beneficial for kitchen renovation projects where the style of the kitchen has been left behind in the land before time. Just arrange a polyurethane kitchen makeover to change the entire look from outdated to on-trend in no time at all.
New polyurethane kitchens can be as bright, light, white, dark or crisp as you want them to be! The hard part is deciding which colour you prefer the most.
#2 Range of finishes
Choosing a polyurethane kitchen does not cement your cabinetry into a one-look-fits-all style. Polyurethane kitchens come in a range of finishes including gloss, semi-gloss and matt and can be applied to a wide range of surfaces including timber, MDF, fibre glass and metals.
#3 Hardy and durable
Polyurethane kitchens are incredibly durable. The finish product is thick and scratch-resistant. It is similar to the way in which car paint is formed and so is built to withstand the banging and battering that is typical of a high use and traffic area, which makes it a great choice for kitchen cabinetry as well as benchtops.
Polyurethane edges are sealed meaning they do not chip or break as easily as some other finishes also.
#4 Easy to clean
Being a plastic-type finish, polyurethane kitchens are incredibly easy to keep clean and maintain. Simply wipe the cabinetry over with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then follow with a dry cloth to avoid leaving any smudges behind. The sealed edges keep dirt and grime from gathering in otherwise hard-to-clean places too.
Keeping up a regular cleaning regime will ensure your polyurethane kitchen looks as good on day one thousand (and more!) as it did on day one.
#5 Maintains its crispness
Unlike some other cabinetry finishes, polyurethane kitchens will not crack or fade when exposed to sunlight or other harsh elements, such as heat, over time. For example, acid catalysis coloured lacquers are used as an alternate kitchen finish and have many similar qualities to polyurethane kitchens. However, polyurethane kitchens win on durability and colour stableness.
Polyurethane kitchens tend to be hardier on the edges and will not get sun bleached. Coloured lacquers, on the other hand, may fade from sun exposure and you could end up with a partly white partly beige kitchen where the sun has settled on your cabinetry. We are pretty sure the
hypercolour trend left us back in the early 90’s…
So, why do we love polyurethane kitchens so much?
