When most people are remodeling their kitchen or starting from scratch, they spend endless hours collecting inspiring kitchen photos. This is a lot of fun but doesn’t always end up helping the person; it can actually make the process harder, especially if you love more than one style, which most people do. The tough part is to narrow down the options and find what you want your dream kitchen to look like. Houzz and Pinterest are great online tools to help with this, here’s how to use them.
- Start off by collecting images that stand out to you without thinking about why. Don’t hesitate or cull down the images just yet, this will need to be done later, but if you start editing the photos in the initial stages you will find yourself thinking too much about it and won’t be selecting photos on first instinct. A great place to start is www.houzz.com.au. On Houzz you can browse popular ideabooks, professionals, and specific kitchens. For example if you know you will want a black kitchen or an L-shaped kitchen, you can search kitchen by these words and thousands of photos will show up to give you inspiration. You can then save to your own personal online ideabook or gallery. Pinterest works much in the same way, but instead of saving to an ideabook, you Pin it to your board. By collecting all images that you love, you will start to see a pattern forming and will be able to see similarities in the photos.
- Now you need to categorise your photos. Your categories can be style such as Modern or French Provincial, or it can be a certain element of the kitchen, for example, dark wooden floors, islands, lighting, wallpaper etc. Again Houzz let’s you categorize as you go. You are able to have as many ideabooks as you like and call them all something different. Pinterests boards are the same. You can have a board for each part of the kitchen (e.g bench tops, cabinets, lighting, floor, sink etc.). Once you have categorized, you need to edit these images. Go back through folders and ideabooks to see if you still feel the same way about them as you did when you first selected them. If you don’t like something or it doesn’t make you say “Wow” then get rid of it, simple as that.
- Now is the time for you to search for photos with specific elements. For example search for images with great island lighting. You may not like the room as a whole, but you like the lighting design, or the range hood, or the sink. Once you have done this, edit again.
After completing all of these steps, you should have a pretty good idea of what you like and dislike and you overall kitchen style. Once you know what your style is, you can start creating the kitchen of your dreams!
