A kitchen layout is more than a blueprint of your kitchen—it’s a map for how your kitchen will function and how the activities will flow. Generally, there are three types of kitchen layouts and various combinations of the 3.
The 3 main kitchen layouts are the;
• U-shape kitchen layouts
• L-shape kitchen layouts, and
• Galley kitchen layouts U-shape kitchen layouts
U-shaped kitchens can work for a small, medium or large kitchen space. There is plenty of kitchen bench space for everyone to work on and if it is a wide U-shape design, it can accommodate a kitchen island, however they are ideal for open planned homes where the kitchen is part of the living area. Often in U-shape kitchens, the lower cabinets are harder to access and they don’t promote socialising in the absence of a central area to gather such as a kitchen island.
L-shape kitchen layouts L-shaped kitchens are highly and are ideal for smaller kitchens due to functionality. L-shaped kitchens are also able act as a wall divider between the kitchen and the living and entertaining area. However, the traditional Kitchen triangle work flow is longer and more challenging in an L-shaped kitchen and it may be more difficult if the space is larger.
Galley kitchen layouts Galley kitchen layouts offers a style of kitchen preferred by most professional chefs as everything just at your fingertips. This kitchen layout makes excellent use of the kitchen work triangle with plenty of workspace and cabinets on either side. Small apartments tend to favour the galley kitchen layout due to their limited space – it is also possible to have one side of the galley open to act as a breakfast bar to make use of the small space. Galley kitchen layouts can be difficult for traffic thoroughfare and requires good lighting as it can be dark unless positioned next to a window.
Functionality trumps all other choices when you are deciding upon your new kitchen layout. It pays in the long run to give special attention to how work areas in the kitchen relate to each other, and keep the work triangle principle in mind when deciding where to place appliances and cabinets.
