When planning the layout and workspace in your kitchen, you need to consider how both the work and traffic should flow through your kitchen. Many factors affect the way your kitchen is designed, including the adjoining rooms, and how you use your kitchen. Ignoring this in the early planning stages will reduce overall functionality and effectiveness of the kitchen space. Here are some things to think about when planning the space in your kitchen.
The first thing you need to do is classify the functions that your kitchen performs, for example food prep, food storage, clean up, cooking etc. Once you have figured out the main uses you have for your kitchen, you then need to decide where in the kitchen they will be situated, considering the order in which they will be performed in. By placing the different zones of your kitchen in the correct order, you will help the traffic and flow of the kitchen.
The next thing to do is to make a list and prioritise. List the features you want in your kitchen, and rank them from most important to least important. This is a good tool for you to re-think and decide what you really need and what you can live without. You may want a wall oven, but when you actually think about it, you only use the oven twice a week on average, and would benefit much more from having the oven under the bench and gain some useful bench space. This list also helps your kitchen designer get a feel for your needs quickly, and get to know you and your family better.
Appliances are also a large part of your kitchen space design. You have to consider your work zones and decide where the appliances should be situated in your kitchen. They also have to work with the space around them. For example, it is useful to have bench space for a food prep area between the sink and the fridge, or the sink and the oven to make it easier and so that everything is within reach. You also need to decide whether you want extra appliances such as two ovens, wine fridges etc., and if so, where can they be placed so that you are not interrupted by guests while you are cooking?
Clearances are another important consideration when space planning for your kitchen. You need to ensure you have enough room to move smoothly from one space to another and that it is a safe place to work. Make sure there is enough room for you to walk through, step back, and pull out drawers. Try to keep any large pull out items away from the main walk way to avoid accidents. If you have designed a kitchen to have 2 or more people cooking at once, be sure to account for this and include walkways that will be wide enough for multiple cooks.
There are many things to think about when planning the space in your kitchen, but if done right you can have your perfect kitchen with perfect functionality.
