Developing and defining your very own kitchen design style is key to creating a space that is not only functional but reflects your personality too. Designing a new kitchen is your chance to reimagine what you think a kitchen should be and think about all the things that it could be.

The Kitchen Design Style Rulebook: There Isn’t One!

Sure, there are popular kitchen design styles, such as Hamptons or Modern Contemporary, that provide a recognisable theme or direction to start with. But within each established style there is so much room to customise and personalise almost every component to create a kitchen space that is as unique as you are.

While having a well-known style or theme in mind helps to give the process some direction in the beginning, there really are no set-in-stone rulebooks when it comes to designing a kitchen.

Of course, there might be some restrictions in terms of the space that you have to work with, or functional recommendations that your designer may highlight, but from a design and aesthetics point of view you really can get creative and let your imagination take the lead.

Make It Your Own

Think about what kind of visual aesthetic you like and how you want to feel when you are in your new kitchen. Do you prefer a space that is traditional and timeless, or modern and sleek? Do you want to it feel relaxed and calm? Or energetic and bold?

You’ll no doubt be spending a lot of time in there, so it is important to consider how you can create a space that feels like home, your home. Developing your own kitchen design style could be your chance to include those kitchen wish list items that you’ve always dreamed of.

Unique Kitchen Design Style Inspiration

If you’re not too sure where to start or what your unique kitchen design style might be, looking at what others have done can be a great way to gather ideas about what you like, and don’t like, for your own space.

We’ve compiled a selection of some recent Harrington Kitchens projects that certainly created their own unique kitchens. From layout to colour and material choices. In every project our designers and their client worked closely together to produce some truly one-of-a-kind amazing results.

Two Islands are Better than One

We’ll let our lovely client, Kate, do the talking on this one.

“We asked Harrington Kitchens to design a kitchen that would provide space for everyday living and functionality without compromising on the overall aesthetic. A two-island kitchen, just wow. I have the everyday essentials that I need, along with a very large island that also provides a servery space when entertaining. I just absolutely love everything about my kitchen. My very own space designed just for our family and how we live.”

Proof that working with an experienced designer can deliver exactly what you need for your family and your lifestyle, even when you didn’t know you needed it!

Unique Doesn’t Have to Be Dramatic

The above projects are definitely unique, and some might say a little dramatic in their own ways. However, creating a unique kitchen design style doesn’t necessarily need to have a high level of intensity or dramatic impact.

These projects took a subtler approach to their uniqueness. They may be understated, but in our opinion, the results are no less impressive.

Take a look at some other elements that you can use to create your unique kitchen space.

Wooden Highlights for a Softened Aesthetic

Touches of wood, or wood-look materials, adds a beautiful softness and visual interest to kitchens with a neutral palette and uncomplicated design.

Handles, shelving and cabinetry finishes are simple, yet effective, elements to add subtle texture and personality to your kitchen space.

A Splash of Colour

The great thing about adding colour to your kitchen design is that it is not an all-or-nothing undertaking.

For some, colouring all the cabinetry a bold, distinctive green or dramatic dark woodgrain may be outside your comfort zone, but you don’t want a stark and clinical space either. Luckily there are so many other options to inject a little splash of colour into your new kitchen.

Block colour on one wall (or part of a wall), a feature colour on the island bench or coloured tiles on the splashback are all great ways to add colour and personality.

Hand painting is also a wonderful way to create a truly unique finish on your cabinetry. The detailing effects on hand painted cabinetry add an element of individuality without the need for distinct colour choices.

The possibilities for creating a unique and individual kitchen space are seemingly endless. Explore our gallery of kitchen projects for even more kitchen design inspiration and ideas.
