Every kitchen needs a sink or two. Kitchen sinks are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, materials and finishes, so finding the right design for your new kitchen can seem like a daunting task.
Quality sinks can last up to 15 years or more – but do show signs of wear and tear as preparation and cleanup of meals start and finish at the sink. Finishes on kitchen sinks can start to dull or chip, and annoying leaks can appear mysteriously around the rim and drain.
When designing your new kitchen, it is good to keep in mind that all kitchen sinks require a minimum cabinet size. This determines how much space you will require or if your new kitchen can accommodate the sink size that you are seeking to use. Your Harrington Kitchens designer will be able to assist you with sizing.
Types of sinks
There are:
• Drop in sinks (where the rim of the sink sits on top of the benchtop)
• Undermount sinks (cannot be used with laminate benchtops)
• Corner sinks
• Fireclay or Butlers sinks (which are great in French Provincial style kitchens)
• Trough sinks,
• Bar / prep sinks.
Kitchen sinks are available in a wide range of materials including stainless steel, concrete, solid-surfacing (resin based material), stone, copper, and other precious metals.
What about kitchen taps?
There is a type of tap for every sink. Taps come in a variety of:
• Single mixer type
• Pull out spray rinse mixer taps
• Bridge taps (mainly used in provincial style kitchens)
• Pot fillers,
• Bar/prep sink taps
These taps are available in polished chrome, oil-rubbed bronzes, nickel, and other precious metals.
