As kitchen bench tops are one of the most used surfaces in the kitchen, looking after them carefully can ensure your kitchen materials stay beautiful and last a lifetime. Kitchen bench tops are a big investment and each type of material has different cleaning needs. Put in a little extra time to clean and maintain your kitchen bench tops the right way with these cleaning tips.
Granite Bench Tops
Granite is a natural stone, which is porous and easily absorbs.
Clean: For everyday cleaning, wipe the surface with warm, soapy water. Be sure not to use any abrasive cleaners or scrubs to avoid scratches. Avoid citrus and acidic cleaners as well as vinegar-based products as alkaline solutions can etch the stone.
Remove Stains: You may need to create a paste mixture of baking soda and water or hydrogen peroxide. Gently apply to the stain and leave for a few days covered in plastic wrap or gently rub the spot with a soft brush to lift the stain. For some specific stains you may need to use bleach.
Sealing: Granite needs to be resealed about every 5 years to prevent stains and make it easier to clean.
Engineered Stone Bench Tops
Engineered stone is non-porous unlike natural stone and resistant to stains, scratches and heat.
Clean: For most spills, use warm water with a gentle liquid soap and a soft damp cloth. Use a soft brush along edges and take care when using bleach solutions. Engineered stone such as Caesarstone require little maintenance and
Remove Stains: It is best to wipe away spills as soon as possible. Avoid using strong chemicals or solvents.
Sealing: Caesarstone does not require sealing.
Laminate Bench Tops
Laminate is stain resistant and a very durable surface but susceptible to heat and scratches so abrasive cleansers and steel wool must never be used.
Clean: Use warm, soapy water, a non-abrasive cleaner or a mild bleach solution. For most spills a regular damp cloth will suffice but take care when using bleach as it may damage some surfaces and colours.
Remove Stains: Use a basic kitchen cleaner to remove greasy build up and baking soda and water to remove a tacky surface.
Sealing: Laminate does not need to be sealed.
